NMI at a Glance
NMI stands for Network Merchants, Inc., a payment technology company founded in 2001 in Roseville, Illinois. The company built a white-label payment gateway that ISOs, ISVs, and payment facilitators use to offer card processing to their merchants under their own brand.
Unlike consumer-facing payment companies, NMI operates behind the scenes. When a merchant processes a card transaction through their ISO's branded portal, the transaction often flows through NMI's gateway without the merchant knowing it.
How NMI Works
NMI is a payment gateway, not a processor. It sits between the merchant's point of sale and the acquiring bank, encrypting card data, applying fraud rules, and routing authorization requests. NMI connects to multiple acquiring processors simultaneously, giving ISOs flexibility to route transactions based on card type, volume, or risk.
